New Delhi : In fight against black money, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has shown support to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to demonetise Indian currency in Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes.

"I support demonetisation as I'm convinced that it will help in the fight against black money," Kumar said addressing a function to mark Prohibition Day here.

There were reports that he has met Bharatiya Janata Party chief Amit Shah, but he laughed off all such reports.

On asking if there is any political motive behind his words, Nitish Kumar claimed that he has taken a principal stand as in his opinion scrapping of high value bank notes would help in diluting black money.

He also clarified that this is not the first time he is taking such a stand; Nitish Kumar had supported Pranab Mukherjee for presidentship despite being a member of NDA.

Kumar, who has described the Centre's demonetisation decision as "sahshik" (courageous), said in addition to scrapping of higher denomination currencies, attack on benami properties and prohibition could lead to creation of "kala dhan mukt Bharat" (black money free India).
