GRSE expects to get orders of building 2 bridges in Kolkata
Kolkata : State-run Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), which was approached by the West Bengal government for erection of two bailey bridges in the city after the partial collapse of a bridge at Majherhat in South Kolkata, is hopeful of bagging the order, an official said on Wednesday.
"We have been in dialogue with the state government and public works department for erection of two bailey bridges. We expect this to be completed before the ensuing Durga Puja festival," GRSE Chairman and Managing Director Rear Admiral V.K. Saxena (retd)said.
According to him, each of the bridge would be 80 feet long, 4.25 meter wide and will have a load capacity of around 90 tonne.
"The total investment for the erection of the two bridges would be Rs 2 crore," he said, adding that the public sector company received a communication from the state government and a formal order will follow soon.
A portion of the Majherhat bridge had collapsed earlier this month, crushing three men to death and leaving 24 injured and several vehicles damaged.
The shipbuilding major, which also manufactures pre-fabricated portable steel bridges, also received inquiries from Siliguri Development Authority for erection of a bailey bridge.
Notably, a small bridge had also collapsed near Siliguri in North Bengal earlier this month.
"We have received inquiries from Siliguri Development Authority as well as Kerala government for bailey bridges. We see orders by state governments and other civilian agencies to build bailey bridges as a major opportunity," he added.
