Punjab Police bust inter-state drug racket

Chandigarh : Punjab Police on Monday busted an inter-state drugs racket with the arrest of two persons who were smuggling poppy husk from Rajasthan to Punjab.

The arrested have been identified as Dharamjit Singh and Gurbir Singh, both from Moga district.

The counter-intelligence wing of the police also impounded a truck loaded with 180 bags of poppy husk.

Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Counter Intelligence H.P.S. Khakh said on Monday that the kingpins of the smuggling module, Jagdev Singh and Shinder Singh, are residents of Daulewala village of Moga district.

"Today morning, we got a tip-off that these smugglers were coming from Rajasthan to Punjab in a truck number PB07-U-1945, which was fully covered with tarpaulin.

Another vehicle, a Scorpio with registration number PB29-N-9314, was escorting the consignment," Khakh said.

The truck was intercepted on the Baghapurana-Jagraon road on Monday.

One person, Buta Singh, an accomplice of the smugglers, managed to escape, he added.
