Is coconut oil a poison for humans? Truth inside

New Delhi : A belief about coconut oil considers it as a good supplement for human body, but a new study claims that it is nothing less than a poison for humans.

According to a professor of Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, coconut oil comes under the category of harmful food products for humans.

During a lecture on "Coconut oil and nutritional error", Professor Karin Michels claimed that the oil is pure poison for humans. He said, the oil has excess amount of saturated fat that can kill humans.

He claimed that the high quantity of saturated fat can block veins, impacting flow of blood and leaving humans with heart diseases.

Coconut oil "has an undeserved health halo," registered dietician Samantha Heller said on "CBS This Morning" Thursday. "It's not going to kill you. ... But it is a saturated fat. And saturated fat we know raises the risk for cardiovascular disease and internal inflammation. It's in the same category as butter and lard."

Heller says the product is fine to use "occasionally, in dishes that you like," but warns against believing the exaggerated health claims circulating on the internet.

In 2017, the American Heart Association (AHA) released a report aiming to shed light on the long-running debate over the healthiest fats. The advisory paper recommended against ingesting coconut oil because of its high saturated fat content.
