New Delhi : American Oncology Institute (AOI) Gurugram has successfully saved the life of a 79-year-old female hailing from Narnaul city in the Mahendergarh District. This remarkable feat involves the treatment of an advanced case of T-Cell Lymphoma, a particularly aggressive form of non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. The accomplishment highlights AOI’s commitment to groundbreaking research and personalized patient-centered care.

The patient was presented with a persistent fever and painful nodes in the neck and armpits for the past three months. Her condition worsened over time; she sought medical help at AOI Gurugram. After a thorough investigation, which included lymph node biopsy and PET Scan, the patient was diagnosed with T-Cell Lymphoma at an advanced stage (beyond stage III).

Under the expert guidance of Dr (Brig) A.K. Dhar, Senior Consultant Medical and Haemato Oncology at AOI Gurugram, the patient underwent a comprehensive explanation of her illness, treatment plan, and expected outcomes. The patient underwent four cycles of chemotherapy tailored to her age and organ function. Remarkably, she achieved a complete response after these treatment cycles, defying the challenging prognosis associated with T-Cell Lymphoma.

Dr (Brig) A.K. Dhar, Senior Consultant Medical and Haemato Oncology, stated, "T-Cell Lymphoma is one of the most aggressive and challenging forms of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Despite significant advancements, there's a dearth of standardized protocols for its treatment, especially in elderly patients. Our patient's case underscores the importance of personalized care and innovative approaches in achieving remarkable outcomes.”

Elderly patients, especially those above 70, often face increased risks of side effects due to chemotherapy. Limited bone marrow reserve, poor drug metabolism, and associated co-morbid conditions pose unique challenges in treatment. Furthermore, the absence of clear guidelines for chemotherapy drug selection and dosing in this age group further complicates the treatment process. The AOI Gurugram team tackled these challenges by carefully adjusting chemotherapy doses, resulting in a more tolerable and effective approach.

Dr Amit Dhawan, Regional COO, American Oncology Institute, Gurugram, said, “AOI Gurugram's approach to cancer care is built on innovation and collaboration. Our multidisciplinary team worked relentlessly to develop a personalized treatment strategy for this elderly patient. We are focused on not just achieving remission but also devising long-term solutions to ensure patients like her enjoy the best possible quality of life.
