New Delhi : In a major blunder in medical science, a surgeon at the Sushruta Trauma Centre run by the Delhi government operated leg of a patient with head injury.

Vijendra Tyagi was admitted to the hospital with head and face injuries, but the doctor confused him with another patient with leg injury in the same ward.

"The surgeon drilled a small hole into my father's right leg to put a pin. It was done under anesthesia so he didn’t even realise the mistake or raise an alarm," Ankit Tyagi, Vijendra’s son told a newspaper. After learning about the incident, he informed hospital authorities about the blunder done by doctor.

A committee has been formed to investigate the matter and doctor has been barred to do any further surgeries without supervision.

Patient's family has decided to take the matter to court as Mr Tyagi in now unable to walk.

A similar incident took place at Fortis Shalimar Bagh two years ago. The surgeons had operated the right leg of a 24-year-old patient while his left leg which was actually injured was neglected.
