Scientific Explanation: Why casual drinkers become heavy drinkers

New Delhi : The time has come when parties and holidays will combine to give you enough reasons to grab a drink and have a great evening with your close ones. While some call themselves a casual drinker and some drink a little too much from the prescribed limit, blaming several other things for their act; here is a scientific explanation on why casual drinkers turn into a heavy drinkers.

According to a recent study, the scientists have found neurons inside the brain which are responsible for a sudden rise in alcohol consumption.

We already know about a brain region called the central nucleus of the amygdala (CeA) plays a vital role in behaviours related to alcohol consumption and use. A new study, conducted by researchers from the University of North California's School of Medicine has found that a specific circuit, when alerted, can cause animal models to drink less alcohol.

The neurons may produce reward-like behaviour. Understanding the circuit can help predict when and why do people drink excess alcohol, and how they can limit the development of alcohol use disorders.

The study further aims to find out how alcohol consumption affects the neurons. The study was published in the Journal of neuroscience.
