Deepavali Receives UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Tag, Marking a Big Win for India

India is celebrating a big cultural achievement as Deepavali, the Festival of Light, has been officially included in UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List. This is a proud moment for 1.4 billion Indians and Indians living around the world. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi called Deepavali “the soul of our civilisation—a celebration of light, hope, and goodness,” showing the world the importance of India’s culture.

UNESCO’s recognition shows that Deepavali is not just a festival but a tradition that brings people together. It celebrates the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. Deepavali has been celebrated for thousands of years and is an important part of India’s spiritual and cultural history. India’s Ambassador to UNESCO, Shri Vishal V. Sharma, played a key role in making this recognition possible.
