Nutritionist Diabetic Educator Karishma Shah talks about diabetes as a lifestyle disorder

New Delhi : Let's go back a few decades and say the word diabetes. Do you know what will happen? People will think of it as slow death incorporated into a person's life due to bad karma. Because that's what it was, a deadly disease that kills a person from inside slowly yet rapidly. Cut back to the present situation, diabetes or obesity are now conditions of the human body that are no longer considered fatal diseases but disorders due to bad lifestyles. Throwing some insights about the same, Integrative Nutritionist & Holistic Wellness Coach Karishma Shah has discussed diabetes, its cause and the associated problem.

Globally, the prevalence of diabetes is a serious public health issue that is almost epidemic in scope. Chronic, noncommunicable illness prevalence is rising alarmingly on a global scale. Cardiovascular disease, for which diabetes and hypertension are key risk factors, claims over 18 million lives annually. 312 million of the 1.7 billion overweight adults in the world today are also obese. Additionally, there are at least 155 million overweight or obese children worldwide. There is a diabetes epidemic going on. The International Diabetes Federation estimates that the relative prevalence of diabetes was 8.0% in 2007 and is expected to rise to 7.3% by 2025. Presently, 246 million individuals worldwide have diabetes, with the 40–59 age group accounting for 46% of those affected. By 2025, this number is expected to rise to 380 million.

It is considered diabetes is a metabolic condition that happens when the body generates problems in breaking down the body's sugar intake. But the scenario has completely changed today. The growing number of diabetic patients are suffering due to high-level of anxiety, stress and unhealthy diet. It is often seen that people respond to stress in different ways. One's body's reaction to stress can vary depending on the kind of experience one goes through. People with type 1 diabetes could react differently. People with type 2 diabetes typically notice a rise in their blood glucose levels under emotional stress. This indicates that their blood glucose levels may rise or fall, and blood sugar can rise due to physical stress.

Not just stress but eating unhealthy food with a high amount of calories, sugar, and salt is not suitable for the body. And all this access to junk food is leading to obesity in end number of people from younger to an older age. Obesity increases the risk of developing diabetes, which is characterized by excess glucose in the bloodstream. And nowadays, these health conditions are increasing among youngsters due to their unhealthy lifestyles.

From the beginning, the adolescent years can be very difficult for any youngster, and attack of stress and anxiety is very common in these years as they strive to 'fit in'. It can be distressing to vary in any way from one's peers. A teen may feel like they deny the situation, and he or she might act aggressively when managing their diabetes or obesity. All these conditions in the human body affect the day-to-day lives of any person and disrupt the course of life, making them a lifestyle problem more than any unpredicted disease.
