Big Ben asteroid is heading towards Earth, NASA warns
New Delhi : Life on the Earth is at risk as an asteroid the size of Big Ben is heading towards our planet, NASA warns. Dubbed as 2013 MD8, the space rock will make a ‘close approach’ to our planet tomorrow afternoon, at which point it will be travel at a staggering speed of 30,422 miles/hour.
Luckily, the asteroid will be over three million miles from Earth during the pass, which will take place at around 17:55 GMT.
However, the distance is still close, says NASA. The space rock is thought to measure around 85 metres in diameter.
To put that into perspective, it’s roughly the same size as the Big Ben clock tower, or the Statue of Liberty!
And, before you get panic the good news is that 2013 MD8 is very unlikely to strike Earth.
NASA said: “NASA knows of no asteroid or comet currently on a collision course with Earth, so the probability of a major collision is quite small.
“In fact, as best as we can tell, no large object is likely to strike the Earth any time in the next several hundred years.”
