New Delhi : BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has announced the appointment of Gautam Gambhir as the new head coach of Team India. The former Indian opening batsman will take over from Rahul Dravid, whose tenure concluded with Team India's victory in the T20 World Cup 2024.

Gambhir will coach the Indian team across all three formats. Shah had previously stated that separate coaches would not be appointed for different formats. Gambhir's term will span 3.5 years. The BCCI had invited applications in May, followed by tests for two candidates. Apart from Gambhir, former Indian women's team coach WV Raman was also in the running. However, Jay Shah has now confirmed Gambhir's appointment.

What did Jay Shah say?

Announcing Gambhir's appointment, Jay Shah expressed his happiness, stating, "I am very pleased to announce Gautam Gambhir as the new head coach of Team India. I welcome him as the head coach of the Indian cricket team. Modern cricket has evolved rapidly, and Gautam has closely observed these changes. Having endured challenges and excelled in various roles throughout his career, I am confident that Gautam is the ideal person to lead Indian cricket forward."

Shah added, "His clear vision for the team, combined with his vast experience, makes him fully capable of taking on this exciting and highly demanding coaching role. The BCCI fully supports Gambhir in this new journey."
