Ahmedabad : India delivered a historic performance to defeat New Zealand by a commanding 96 runs in the final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. With the victory, India retained the world championship in front of a jubilant home crowd.

New Zealand won the toss and elected to bowl, but India’s explosive batting lineup dominated the match from the outset. The hosts piled up a massive 255/5 in 20 overs, the highest team total ever recorded in a T20 World Cup final.

Sanju Samson led the charge with a sensational 89 off 46 balls, smashing five fours and eight sixes. He was well supported by Ishan Kishan, who scored a brisk 54 off 25 balls, while Abhishek Sharma set the tone early with the fastest fifty of the tournament, finishing with 52 off just 21 deliveries. In the final overs, Shivam Dube added late fireworks with an unbeaten 26 off 8 balls, pushing India to a daunting total.

For New Zealand, James Neesham emerged as the most effective bowler, claiming 3 wickets for 46 runs, including a brief three-wicket burst that momentarily slowed India’s momentum.

Chasing a record target of 256, New Zealand struggled against India’s disciplined bowling attack and were bowled out for 159 in 19 overs. Tim Seifert top-scored with a quick 52 off 26 balls, while Mitchell Santner contributed 43 off 35 balls, but the rest of the lineup failed to build meaningful partnerships.

India’s bowling was led by Jasprit Bumrah, who produced a match-winning spell of 4/15, dismantling the Kiwi batting order. Axar Patel provided excellent support with 3/27, ensuring the chase never gained momentum.

The victory marked several historic milestones for India. The team became the first nation to win three Men’s T20 World Cup titles (2007, 2024 and 2026), the first team to successfully defend the T20 World Cup crown, and the first host nation to win the tournament on home soil.
