Lionel Messi announces retirement, says this will be his last international match of the career
New Delhi : Ace footballer Lionel Messi broke many hearts on Friday as he announced his retirement from the international game with the upcoming World Cup in Qatar next month. The 35-year-old Lionel Messi will be playing his 5th world cup but he is yet to see his side picking up the cup.
“There's some anxiety and nerves at the same time ... it is the last one," Messi was seen saying this in a TV interview. This is the first time when Messi has openly spoken about his future plans.
It must be noted that he has announced that the upcoming world cup will be his last world cup; but, he has not cleared if it will also be his last event for the national team. Argentina won the World Cup in 1978 and 1986. The team will open the tournament on November 22 against Saudi Arabia in Group C before facing Mexico and Poland.
Neymar reacted to the news in a unique way and remembered the first time when he saw Messi playing for the team.
He wrote on Twitter: "I remember in 2006 asking to take one of my exams a few hours earlier in order to be home to watch Argentina vs. Serbia and Montenegro at the World Cup. I did and made it home for the game. Saw the 6-0 win and Lionel Messi make his debut. Crazy we are at Messi's last World Cup."
