Coronvirus: Tokyo Olympics to be cancelled if this happens
New Delhi : After a couple of delays, the Tokyo Olympics will not be further postponed and will be cancelled if coronavirus is not contained by 2021, the Games president Yoshiro Mori has said.
Tokyo 2020 was already delayed by an year after the coronavirus outbreak had gripped the world. More than 200,000 people have been killed by the pandemic till date.
Responding to a question that will the event be more postponed if the need arise, Mori replied, “No. In that case, it’s cancelled.”
The head of Japan Medical Association Yoshitake Yokokura, on the other hand, has claimed that it is not possible to execute the event of such magnitude unless or until a vaccine is developed for the coronavirus.
“Unless an effective vaccine is developed I think it will be difficult to hold the Olympics next year,” Yokokura told reporters in Tokyo on Tuesday. “I’m not saying at this point that they shouldn’t be held. The outbreak is not only confined to Japan … it’s a worldwide issue.”
Meanwhile, Mori has expressed hopes that the Olympics will be held “in peace next summer” and added, “Mankind is betting on it.”
