New Delhi : Newly appointed IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw issued a stern warning to social media giant, asking it to follow the 'law of the land'.

The new warning comes amid tension between Twitter and the Central government.

Earlier in the day, Twitter told Delhi High Court that it will require at least eight weeks to appoint a new grievance officer. However, the company mentioned that it is in the process of setting up a liaison office in India, in compliance to the new IT rules.

The court accused Twitter of misleading the authorities as earlier it did not mention that an 'interim' grievance officer has been appointed.

The Centre told the Delhi High Court that social media giant Twitter Inc has failed to comply with India's new IT rules on July 5. It also mentioned that 'the law of the land' must be followed.

In an affidavit filed by the Centre, it said any non-compliance amounts to a breach of provisions of IT rules, leading to Twitter losing its immunity conferred under the IT Act.

An interim officer appointed by the company had resigned from his post in June this year.
