Delhi : Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is a condition where the upper chamber of the heart beats out of sync with the lower chambers. This chronic condition can be fatal, leading to heart failure or blood clots, but sometimes, individuals with the condition do not experience any symptoms until it is too late. But the Apple Watch has a feature that could help you track the condition.

Apple Watch’s AFib History feature was announced during WWDC 2022 but it is only available in India now. The condition is chronic but the amount of time that people spend in AFib can change. It can be influenced by exercise, sleep, diet and other conditions. For people already diagnosed with the condition, AFib History is a feature that can track the amount of time that their heart is in AFib. it can support the management of those lifestyle factors that influence the condition.

The AFib History feature on Apple Watches gives users a weekly estimate of the amount of time their heart shows signs of AFib–also known as AFib burden. Users can track this over a long term and even share this information with their physician.

Here is how you can set up the AFib history feature

Start by updating your iPhone to the latest version of iOS and your Apple Watch to the latest version of watchOS. On your phone, open the Health app, tap on “Browse,” and then tap “Heart.” Tap AFib History and then tap “Set Up,” and then tap “Get Started.” Enter your date of birth and select yes to indicate that you have been diagnosed with AFib by a doctor, then tap “Continue” to learn more about AFib History, the results and the tracked life factors. Hit “Done.”

How to view AFib History estimate

After the smartwatch gathers enough readings, users receive weekly alerts every Monday with the estimated percentage of time their heart showed signs of AFib from the previous week. Users can also look at their history in more detail in the Health app. The estimate appears as a percentage, the lower the percentage, the less time you spent in AFib. AFib History Highlights shows the day of week and time of day the users’ heart is more frequently showing signs of AFib. It is available after six weeks of wearing the Apple Watch.
