Delhi : It is scheduled to be canceled on January 1st if you have a UPI (Unified Payments Interface) account with any of the well-known apps, such Google Pay, Phone Pay, or Paytm, and you haven't been able to use it for a year or more for whatever reason.

National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) circular that was released on November 7, 2023, would be followed up on with this. During the decision-making process, the payments corporation body explained the action by stating that it happens when consumers change their cellphone number without deleting their previous number from the banking system.

Therefore, a new user may receive the prior number. Put otherwise, in order to prevent misuse, a phone number registered with a UPI app will be deactivated from the payments app when it stops working.

How will the deactivation process work?

The third-party application providers (TPAP) and payment service providers (PSP) will handle the deactivation procedure. They will identify UPI IDs, related UPI numbers, and phone numbers of clients who haven't made any transactions using their UPI IDs for a year.

These clients' UPI numbers and IDs will then be blocked from being used for inward credit transactions. The same phone number will then also be deregistered from UPI mapper by payment service providers. By December 31, 2023, all UPI apps, including Google Pay, Paytm, and Phone Pay, are expected to have adopted the same.

Customers can then re-register their individual UPI apps for mapper linkage, though, and use the UPI PIN to conduct non-financial activities, such as payments.

In its Nov. 7 circular, the NPCI provides additional details about the procedure, saying that "UPI apps will perform requester validation before initiating pay-to-contact/pay to mobile number." The customer's name that has been retrieved prior to starting a transaction will be displayed by UPI apps; names that have been kept or cached on the app's end will not be displayed." The payments organization gave orders to have this put into effect by December 31, 2023, which is the end of the year.
