Beijing : More than 100 people have been reportedly killed in a massive 6.2 magnitude earthquake in northwest China's Gansu and Qinghai provinces on Monday. According to a China-based news agency 86 people died in the province of Gansu and others in the neighbouring Qinghai province.

As the rescue operation is underway, nearly 250 people were injured in the incident. The earthquake left houses damaged and roads unearthed. The power communication was also knocked out in the region.

The local media reports also claimed that several houses were collapsed in the earthquake as people ran for their safety in open streets.

US Geological Survey noted intensity of the earthquake as 5.9, while Xinhua said it was 6.2 in magnitude.

In the videos shared by people on social media, power cuts and water supply can be seen affected with several houses damaged in the earthquake.

The earthquake struck at a depth of 10 kilometers at 11:59pm local time Monday, according to the USGS, which revised the magnitude downward after initially reporting 6.0. The earthquake was later followed by several aftershocks.
