9 dead, over 2800 injured as pagers explode across Lebanon
New Delhi : Nine people have died and over 2800 people have been injured in a series blast of pagers across Lebanon on Tuesday. According to the local media reports, Iran's Ambassador to Lebanon has also been injured in the attack that happened at around 3:30 pm local time in Lebanon (6 pm IST).
Talking about the incident in a press conference, Lebanese Health Minister Firass Abiad said, "nine people have died and over 2800 have been wounded in the incident. Nearly 200 of the people are critical."
The attack was allegedly targeted for US-designated terror group Hezbollah. It has been learned that 10-year-old girl has also lost her life in the attack.
Hezbollah, which is banned both by the United States and the European Union is the political and military establishment in Lebanon and is backed by Iran. Hezbollah backs Hamas, which has been at war with Israel in Gaza since October 2023.
A couple of media reports claimed that Hezbollah has blamed Israel for the attack. Tagging it as one of the biggest "security breach" in the history, it mentioned that all pagers exploded nearly at the same time.
The explosions happened outside Lebanon too, as four people were injured in Syria as at least one pager blew up in a vehicle in Damascus.
