Los angeles : Ahead of the US Presidential Elections 2016, the federal agencies have asked residents to remain vigilant in wake of terror threats, presiding to which New York City Police Department and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey have been alerted to the information.

The Police in New York is continuing high levels of patrol but declined to offer details on the warning.

In a statement, the department said, "We are aware of the information and working with intelligence agencies and the Joint Terrorism Task Force.”

A similar warning was issued by the United States last month after they carried out strikes in Afghanistan targeting two of al Qaeda's senior leaders in the country.

According to Nicholas Rasmussen, director of the U.S. National Counterterrorism Center, "We still view al-Qa'ida and the various al-Qa'ida affiliates and nodes as a principal counterterrorism priority.”

Texas Governor Greg Abbott said his office was monitoring the situation.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation did not confirm the reports or comment on details but authorities are assessing whether there is a plot and whether the states named are real targets or misdirection.

As per the reports, the attacks are expected a day before the election day i.e.  November 8.
