Amid row with India, Maldives urges China to send more tourists
New Delhi : Looks like Maldives is in no mood to settle things up with India amid row of controversial comments against PM Modi and the nation by a couple of their ministers, who are now suspended.
It has been learned that the President of Maldives Mohamed Muizzu has urged China, one of their close allies, to help them in this diplomatic strain between the two nations by sending more Chinese tourists to Maldives.
China, on the other hand, had earlier released a statement suggesting that the matter must not be escalated and India should act accordingly.
Maldivian President Muizzu's comment comes as he is on a five-day state visit to China.
During his address to the businesses in China, Muizzu said that pre covid China used to be the number one nation on the list of tourists visiting the island nation and this should be done again.
The two countries also signed a USD 50 million project to develop an integrated tourism zone in Maldives, it was reported.
The social media is outraged and abuzz with the disrespect by Maldives towards India and PM Narendra Modi. Amid this, when an apology is expected, Maldives taking China route will be a move India and its supporting nations would not appreciate.
