MATI condemns social media posts against PM Modi, urges for continued 'good relationship'

New Delhi : Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI) on Monday reacted over the growing debate over anti-India social media posts around Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to Lakshadweep. In its reaction, MATI said that India has been a key market for tourism in Maldives and they would want relationship between the two nations to remain as such despite a few unwanted negative news in the recent past.

The Maldives Association of Tourism Industry expressed strong disapproval of certain Deputy Ministers' derogatory remarks on social media targeting the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi and the nation. Describing India as one of their closest neighbors and allies, MATI emphasized the enduring gratitude for India's consistent support in times of crisis and acknowledged the significant role India has played in the Maldives' tourism industry.

In a statement released on Monday, MATI also highlighted India's crucial contribution to the Maldives' recovery efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic, emphasizing the continuous importance of India as a top market for the Maldives."

Meanwhile, the three MPs who had allegedly made derogatory remarks over PM Modi and India via their social media posts have been suspended from their roles.

Support for PM Modi

Online travel booking portal Easemytrip stood in solidarity and banned all flights and hotel bookings to Maldives from India. Makemytrip, on the other hand, shared how bookings for Lakshadweep have grown three fold since PM's visit to the island.
