China to build world's longest tunnel to drain Brahmaputra river
Beijing : The scientists backed by the ruling political party in China are planning a 1000 KM long tunnel to pull out water from the Yarlung Tsangpo (Brahmaputra) river near the Indian border.
According to a media report, the water from Brahmaputra river will be diverted to arid Xinjiang. The 1000-km long tunnel will be the longest one in the world.
The Yarlung Tsangpo river enters India from Arunachal Pradesh and gets its name Brahmputra from Assam. Several households, families in North-East run their livelihood from the water of this river.
The tunnel project by China has already entered into its blueprint phase and will create a severe water crisis in North East once implemented.
Longest Tunnel in China
The project in itself is one of the massive for China as the longest working tunnel in the country is 85 km long.
The longest-tunnel in the world is 137-km-long, located in New York.
Brahmaputra river tunnel plan
According to a report by Hindustan Times, the recommendation from the scientists is simple – drain the Tsangpo in Tibet Autonomous Region and tunnel it to Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, which lies in the rain-shadow area of the Tibet plateau. The proposed tunnel will drop from the world’s highest plateau, its multiple sections connected by waterfalls.
