Death sentence to Kerala nurse in Yemen, MEA assures all possible help from Centre
Kerala : Yemen recently awarded death sentence to a Kerala nurse with execution likely to held within a month. Taking note of the matter, MEA on Monday said that the Indian Government is extending all possible help to family of the nurse, who has been identified as Nimisha Priya.
"We are aware about sentencing of Nimisha Priya in Yemen. We understand that the family is exploring all possible options and the Government is extending all possible help in the matter," said MEA.
The death sentence was recently approved by Yemen President Rashad al-Alimi.
With reports of death sentence to be held within a month, it has become a race against time for the family to save their daughter.
Nimisha Priya hails from Kollengode in Kerala and was sentenced to death in a case for allegedly murdering a Yemen citizen. She had moved to Yemen in 2008 to support her family. She worked in a number of hospitals before deciding to settle in her own clinic in 2017.
According to the family, a dispute aroused between Priya and with her partner over disproportionate assets, Priya allegedly injected Mahdi with a sedative to retrieve her passport. However, an overdose took his life.
She was nabbed while making an attempt to flee from the country; later she was convicted to murder in 2018. In 2020, a trial court in Sanaa sentenced her to death, and Yemen's Supreme Judicial Council upheld the verdict in Nov 2023, though it left open the option of blood money. The case has drawn widespread attention and raised concerns over the fate of Indian nationals abroad as the family and supporters continue their efforts to save Priya from the death penalty.
