New Delhi : The US-based firm Moderna's coronavirus vaccine can help immune system in human bodies to produce anti-bodies for around three months, foreign agency AFP quoted a study as saying. The vaccine recently proved to be 94 per cent efficient in curing COVID-19 infection.

The study, conducted by the researchers at the National Institute for Allergies and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), was performed on 34 volunteers of both old and young age group. It was also found that the antibodies declined after some time but they remained elevated for good 3 months.

According to experts, even if the antibodies fade over time, the immune system will remember the virus if re-exposed and produce new antibodies. As per the study, the shots may help produce a type of immune cell that will help the system remember the virus. However, more studies will be required to affirm the claim.

The Moderna Inc. had recently said that they will be applying for permission at American and European regulators for emergency use of the vaccine on coronavirus patients.

It may get an emergency approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) after an advisory committee reviews the vaccine on December 17.

Moderna is just behind Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech in seeking to begin vaccinations in the US in December.
