New Delhi : Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajpaksha has reportedly gone to Maldives ahead of resignation. Nationwide protests have been seen against him amid ongoing financial crisis.

Over the weekend, Sri Lankan President had promised that he will resign from his post on Wednesday, clearing way for peaceful transition of power.

Gotabaya Rajpaksha has immunity from arrest as the President. To avoid the possibility of getting detained he has allegedly gone to Maldives.

According to media reports, he has gone with his wife, bodyguards.

He is accused of mismanaging the economy to a point where the nation has run out of foreign exchange to import the essential items, which has hampered the lives of more than 20 million people residing in the nation.

If he steps down as promised, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will automatically become acting president until parliament elects an MP to serve out the presidential term, which ends in November 2024.
