Bihar to America: Flavors of Mithila goes global via Amazon

From desi delight to global fame: Darbhanga’s son gives Makhana an international identity

New Delhi : Shravan Kumar Roy from Darbhanga has demonstrated that with a unique vision and determined spirit, even a local product can earn international acclaim. What began with a modest investment of ₹15,000 has now grown into a pan-India venture—his brand “Makhana Wala” has carved out its niche even in the United States. Shravan left behind a corporate career with an annual package of ₹8 lakh to pursue his mission of turning makhana into a global brand, and he is now scripting a remarkable success story.

Makhana Showcased at the G-20 Summit

Makhana, traditionally harvested from the ponds of Mithila’s Darbhanga, Madhubani, and Saharsa, has moved beyond conventional consumption. By packaging it as a nutritious snack, Shravan transformed it into a mainstream health food brand. Under his label “MBA Makhana Wala,” innovative products such as Makhana Dosa, Makhana Cookies, Makhana Kheer, and other delicacies are now available in the market. Special dishes made from makhana were also presented on the global platform of the G-20 Summit. A dedicated Makhana Center has even been established at Darbhanga Airport.

Desi Flavor, Reinvented

Taking things a step further, Shravan launched a unique restaurant model that infuses makhana into popular Indian cuisine. Whether pairing it with dosas or blending it into Gujarati dhokla, his inventive use of the ingredient has helped bring it into kitchens across India.

From IIT Dreams to Entrepreneurial Drive

Shravan admits he failed the IIT entrance exam three times. Rather than being discouraged, he used those setbacks as motivation to start his own business. Beginning with raw makhana sales and moving into branded packaging, he has taken his enterprise to great heights. Today, over 100 families benefit—directly or indirectly—from employment opportunities created through his efforts.

A Journey Marked by Struggles

Shravan’s entrepreneurial path was anything but easy. Leaving his job, facing resistance from his family, difficulties securing loans, and the challenges of the COVID-19 lockdown all tested his resolve—but he never gave up. He has been recognized with the MSME Honor Award in 2021 and the District Entrepreneurship Award in 2022. Notably, he is the first GI (Geographical Indication) certified user of makhana, a distinction officially recognized by India’s Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade.
