Twitter appoints new interim chief compliance officer
New Delhi : Days after Central government's strong warning over new IT-rules, Twitter has announced the appointment of an interim Chief Compliance Officer. The company mentioned that the details will be shared directly with the IT Ministry soon.
The announcement came after government gave one last chance to Twitter to comply with India’s new IT policy.
The IT company had been delaying the appointment of a new chief compliance officer in India despite implementation of new policies in the nation; it was also questioning India's values over the change in rules.
Last week, the US-based company had assured the Indian authorities that they have advanced the process of selecting the officer and the details for the same will be shared soon.
A Twitter spokesperson on Tuesday said the company continues to make every effort to comply with the new guidelines, and is keeping the IT Ministry apprised of progress at every step of the process.
An interim Chief Compliance Officer has been retained and details will be shared with the Ministry directly soon, the spokesperson added.
The government and Twitter had been on a face-off like situation several times in last few months. Recently, the company had marked BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra's tweet as 'manipulated media'. The move had irked several political leaders from the party.
Twitter has an estimated 1.75 crore users in India, as per data cited by the government recently.
