Supreme Court bans sale of firecrackers in New Delhi

New Delhi : Firecrackers will not be sold anymore in Delhi and its neighbouring places, the Supreme Court ruled today, acting on the petition of three infants.

The ban comes at a time when wedding season is at its peak in the national capital. The apex body had earlier indicated that they might favour the decision due to increasing pollution in New Delhi.

The petition by the three children had said: "Our lungs have not yet fully developed and we cannot take further pollution through bursting of crackers."

The court made it clear that all existing licenses to sell firecrackers will be suspended and no new license will be issued till further notice.

So far, traders were allowed to sell if they had a licence to do so.

The court has also asked the Central Pollution Control Board to submit a report within three months on the harmful effects of making crackers.
