All four convicts in Nirbhaya Gangrape case hanged to death in Tihar Jail
New Delhi : The four convicts in 2012 Delhi gangrape case have been hanged to death at 5:30 AM on Friday, seven years after they committed heinous crime of brutally gangraping and murdering a 23-year-old physiotherapy student in a moving bus on December 16, 2012 night.
The woman was thrown on the road naked and later succumbed to her internal injuries at the hospital.
There were six men who had committed the crime but one man committed suicide while the other was found juvenile and was released after he spent three years in a reform house.
The men accused in the matter were arrested within a year and the death sentence was awarded to them by the Supreme Court in 2017; but due to legal options their execution was delayed for so long.
The road to the gallows was full of setbacks for the family of the victim, but her parents continued with the legal battle to see the culprits hanged. “The biggest victory would be when they are hanged,” the woman’s mother said during the course of the trial which saw four death warrants in about two months.
The families of the convicts, on the other hand, kept pleading the justice system to show some mercy on the convicts.
The four convicts - fruit-seller Pawan Gupta, unemployed Mukesh Singh, bus cleaner Akshay Thakur and gym instructor Vinay Sharma - reached the President’s doorsteps multiple times with requests for mercy and filed petitions in Supreme Court against their conviction. But all the petitions and requests were rejected.
