Attempt to suicide not a punishable offence

New Delhi : Taking a very bold step, government has decided to scrap Article 309 from the Indian Penal code. This will now make attempt to suicide a non-punishable offence soon. After 18 states and 4 Union Territories lend their approval, the government took the final call and decided to delete it. This will also come out as breather for Sharmila Irom who has been on hunger strike for years and has also attempted suicide at several occasions.
