New Delhi : In exact 21 days, India has registered another million positive cases of coronavirus to become the third nation in the world with more than 2 million Covid-19 cases. The nation is now just behind US and Brazil. 42% of the new cases came from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Bihar.

On Thursday, India registered fresh 62,088 cases, taking the total tally of positive cases to 2,022,730. The doubling rate of cases in the country now stands at 22.7 days. This is significantly higher than it was in the US (60.2 days) and Brazil (35.7 days) on the day they crossed two million cases - suggesting that India’s caseload could surpass the tallies in these two countries unless the trend reverses or a vaccine is developed.

The experts have estimated that if the cases continue to grow with such pace then another million cases will come in just a little over two weeks.

The US total now stands at 4,993,508 cases and Brazil is at 2,873,304.

In the first million cases, the major contribution was from Delhi and Mumbai. In the second million, the trend has shifted. Delhi's contribution has come down from 13% in first million to 3% in second million.

India’s journey to two million cases took 158 days.
