New Delhi : Indian Railways continuously works on making your journey convenient and safer; adding more to safety is 'Kavach' - automatic train protection technology, which was tested by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Friday.

On the occasion of World Safety Day, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw got onto locomotive to do the live trial of Kavach system.

He also shared a video clip of the testing in which locomotive's speed was controlled by the system based upon the traffic signal.

In the video, the engine was shown running at a high speed when it crosses a yellow signal; the system detects that the driver has not reduced the speed on yellow light and it soon reduces the train speed on its own. Later, it detects a red signal coming and automatically applies brakes to ensure safe halt of the train.

How KAVACH works?

"It works on the principle of continuous update of movement by using high frequency radio communication. It also conforms to SIL-4 (Safety Integrity Level - 4) which is the highest level of safety certification," the Railways said in a release.

"RFID tags are provided on the tracks and at station yard for each track and signals for track identification, location of trains and identification of train direction. The ‘On Board Display of Signal Aspect’ (OBDSA) is to help loco pilots check signals on board consoles even when the visibility is low," it added.
