New Delhi : The Kerala Government on Friday hiked taxes on liquor by 200 per cent in the new state budget. According to the second budget presented by Pinarayi Vijayan government, liquor with cost of upto Rs 400 will be taxed 200 percent while 210 percent tax will be levied on liquor costing above Rs 400.

Beef food also saw an hike of tax by 100 percent in the state budget presented by Kerala Finance Minister Issac Thomas.

Liquor sales during the Christmas season in the state clocked a new record, netting over Rs 195.29 crore. State-owned Beverages Corporation (BEVCO), the sole vendor of Indian Made Foreign Liquor in both the wholesale and retail markets, recorded a sales turnover of Rs 195.29 crores through its 330 outlets from December 21 to 24, 2017, its officials said.

In 2016, the sale figure was at Rs.157.39 crore.
