New Delhi : The Indian Metrological Department (IMD) on Sunday confirmed the arrival of monsoon in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The department said that the adjoining areas have started experiencing rainfall.

"In view of strengthening of southwesterlies in the lower tropospheric levels, fairly widespread to widespread rainfall activity and persistent cloudiness over the area; Southwest Monsoon has advanced into some parts of South Bay of Bengal, most part of Andaman Nicobar Islands and Andaman Sea today, the 16th May, 2022. The Northern Limit of Southwest Monsoon passes through 5°N/80°E, 8°N/85°E, 11°N/90°E, Long Islands and 14.8°N/97.5°E.

Amid the presence of cyclone in the region, widespread rainfall over Lakshadweep and north Tamil Nadu coast are expected.

Last week, the IMD said had said southwest monsoon was expected to reach Kerala by May 27, a good five days before the normal onset date of June 1 under the favourable weather conditions triggered by remnants of Cyclone Asani.
