New Delhi : In a momentous step, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made history on Sunday by placing the sacred 'Sengol' in the newly constructed Parliament building.

The 'Sengol', a historical sceptre from Tamil Nadu, was initially handed over to the first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, symbolizing the transfer of power from the British colonial rule. Since then it has been preserved in a museum in Allahabad for many years. PM Modi has now installed the sacred honor upon the new Parliament building by positioning the 'Sengol' within its walls.

The concept of the 'Sengol' originated from a discussion between Lord Mountbatten, the final Viceroy of British India, and Prime Minister Nehru, during the time of India's independence. Inquisitive about the symbolic representation of the transfer of power, Mountbatten posed this question to Nehru.

The new Parliament building, which has been constructed at an approximate cost of ₹970 crore, has four storeys. The architectural design of the building was crafted by HCP Design, Planning and Management, based in Ahmedabad, while the construction was carried out by Tata Projects Limited.

Earlier, 19 Opposition parties, including the Congress, had expressed their intent to boycott the inauguration of the new Parliament. In a joint statement, they emphasized that the new building held no significance when the essence of democracy seemed to have been diminished within the Parliament. Their primary objection revolved around Prime Minister Narendra Modi's decision to personally inaugurate the new Parliament building, seemingly sidelining President Droupadi Murmu in the process.
