UP Police books Twitter India chief in distorted India Map case

New Delhi : Manish Maheshwari, Twitter India chief, has been booked in an FIR filed by the Uttar Pradesh Police in a case related to distorted India map that showed Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh as different nations.

Besides Maheshwari, Amrita Tripathi, Head, News Partnerships has also been named in the case, filed under Section 505 (2) of the Indian Penal Code (creating or promoting enmity, hatred or ill-will between classes) and Section 74 of IT (Amendment) Act 2008.

“This act of treason has been committed intentionally and action should be taken,” said the complaint filed by Bajrang Dal’s leader Praveen Bhati.

Earlier this week, Karnataka High Court had granted interim relief to Maheshwari in a case related to Ghaziabad attack video. Justice G. Narendar restrained the UP Police from taking any coercive action against Maheshwari and also directed it to conduct their inquiry through virtual mode.

Meanwhile, Twitter has removed distorted map of India which it showcased on career page. This was the second incident when Twitter had shown a wrong Indian map. Earlier, it had shown Leh as a part of China.

Interestingly, this comes amid reports of Twitter-appointed interim grievance officer quitting his post.

The US tech giant has been in tussle with the Indian government over new Indian social media rules, which makes it mandatory for a company to hire an interim grievance officer based in India.
