We don’t want Bullet trains, we need better Railways: Mumbai teen files petition to PM Modi

Mumbai : A Mumbai teen started off an online campaign on Friday evening to show anger against the recent stampede at Elphinstone Railway station that killed at least 23 people and left many others injured on Friday.

Shreya Chavan, a class XII student, has filed a petition to Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying, “We don’t want Bullet trains, we need better Railways.”

The petition garnered over 4,327 signatures within 24 hours of the posting time.

In her petition, she wrote, “Statistically speaking, nine people die every day on the tracks of Mumbai. Under this scenario the funding used for the not needed Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train should be invested in improving the conditions of Mumbai local trains.”

She also slammed Bullet train proposal in India and suggested that priority should be on enhancing the Indian Railways.

“We decided to take up the issue then (after the student’s death). If students are not able to travel to college by trains then what is the point of a bullet train,” she mentions in her petition.
