Marine Scientists capture never seen actions of Dumbo Octopus
New Delhi : The Pacific Ocean is home to adorable marine creatures which are extra-ordinary and exclusive. This time, the marine scientists during the patrolling of Deep Ocean came across the rare view of Dumbo Octopus which is similar to Disney cartoons' octopus. The E/V Nautilus crew were fortunate enough to spot Dumbo octopuses (Grimpoteuthis) which live deep below the surface of the ocean. The crew succeeded in pluming those depths with the help of remotely operated underwater vehicles, such as ROV Hercules. They have explored those marine colonies which were humans seldom venture.
During the exploration of rocky outcropping on the southeast side of the seamount, they have come across the swimming octopus and the vehicle successfully recorded each step of the wonderful creature.
"Oh my god is that the little Dumbo?" one scientist said, quickly followed by an adoring chorus of "Dumbo!" "Oh my gosh!" "So cool!" and "Woooooowwwww."
The footage, shot by ROV Hercules' high-resolution camera, shows extraordinary detail of the cephalopod as it twists and turns, rippling its mantle, flipping over, and flapping the fins on the sides of its head.
Scientists say that the octopus measures around 60 centimetres (1.97 feet) long, much bigger than other species of Dumbo octopus.
The octopus was spotted in an oasis, a sort of deep-sea garden lush with corals and sponges.
Also, the crew found a whole garden of brooding Muusoctopus robustus tucked into rocks protecting their eggs.
The expedition is a survey of the Davidson Seamount, an extinct volcano in Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.
