New Delhi : England had to face a defeat from India in their recent three-match ODI series; English fans were just recovering from the shock when England all-rounder Ben Stokes announced that he will be retiring from the ODI format after Tuesday's match against South Africa.

Ben Stokes had made his debut in the ODI cricket in 2011; since then he has played 104 ODIs in which he scored 2919 runs, slammed three centuries, and picked 74 wickets.

He announced his decision on social media, saying that it was among the hardest decisions to take for him.

"I will play my last game for England in ODI cricket on Tuesday in Durham. I have decided to retire from this format. This has been an incredibly tough decision to make. I have loved every minute of playing with my mates for England. We have had an incredible journey on the way," said Ben Stokes.

"As hard as a decision as this was to come to, it’s not as hard dealing with the fact I can’t give my teammates 100% of myself in this format anymore. The England shirt deserves nothing less from anyone who wears it," added Stokes.

England recently lost three-match ODI series 2-1 against India.
