New Delhi : India’s famous women tennis star Sania Mirza ended her 18-year-long Grand Slam career with a loss in mixed double final at the Australian Open 2023. She was playing the game with her partner Rohan Bopanna in Melbourne on January 27th. They lost the game against Brazilian pair of Luisa Stefani and Rafael Matos 7-6 (2), 6-2in the title clash.

It must be noted that Sania Mirza had already announced that she will be returning from the professional tennis after the WA Tournament in Dubai. This was held last Grand Slam appearance of the career. With this loss, her illustrious career ends with 3 mixed double Grand Slam titles and 3 women double titles.

Meanwhile, the Brazilian pair - Stefani and Matos has become the first mixed double team from Brazil to win a Grand Slam title. Sania Mirza got emotional during the match end conversation: “My professional career started in Melbourne… I couldn’t think of a better arena to finish my (Grand Slam) career at,” Sania Mirza said after the match, breaking down in tears.

"I am still going to play in a couple of more professional tournaments. I played Serena Williams in the third round here, as an 18-year-old which was 18 years back. I have had privilege of coming back here again and again, I couldn’t think of a better place than Rod Laver Arena to finish my Grand Slam career," she added.
