Explained: Why PUBG may get banned despite being non-Chinese game?

New Delhi : PUBG Mobile is undoubtedly one of the most popular smartphone games among Indian youth. However, there are reports which claim that the game may soon get banned in the nation due to security issues. It has been learned that the government is planning to soon ban 275 more Chinese applications, and the list also includes PUBG Mobile.

A couple of days back, India had banned 59 Chinese applications, including TikTok, SHAREit, UC Browser and more.

There are many questions like Is PUBG a Chinese application? Why it was not banned earlier with Tik Tok? And many other questions which we will try to answer in the article.

For those who do not know what PUBG, it is a battle royale game developed by PUBG Corporation, a subsidiary of South Korean video game company Bluehole. The game is available on PC, Xbox, PlayStation and Mobile. The game was created by Brendan Greene (PlayerUnknown) and released back in 2017.

In the game, 100 players jump onto an abandoned island and turn it into a battlefield. The last man standing gets the winner title. Soon after becoming a hit on PC gaming, the makers of the game collaborated with Tencent Games to release the mobile version of it. The Mobile version was an instant hit and garnered over 600 million times since launch.

Is PUBG Mobile a Chinese game?

The answer to above question is both Yes and No. PUBG is made by Bluehole Inc Tencent Games; during the starting day it was developed by South Korean company and it had not link with China, but when it expanded to Mobile version, it was developed in collaboration with Chinese makers which puts it under the scanner of Indian government.

Additionally, Tencent has the second-largest stake in Bluehole, the company that owns PUBG Corporation. However, keep in mind that even though it is the second largest, it’s still 1.5 per cent.

Why wasn’t PUBG Mobile banned with TikTok?

The Indian government has not given any particular reason for it, but they have mentioned that the game is under their scanner and if found vulnerable in terms of security they will instantly ban it in India. We think the government is mulling over it as the game is not developed by a Chinese company and Tencent just have a partnership in it.
