Delhi : In India, Google has begun rolling out its Android-based earthquake alarm system. The method makes use of smartphone sensors like accelerators, which can serve as miniaturized seismometers to find tremors. The system would deliver early earthquake alerts for Android users in an area that is likely to be impacted, the business said on Wednesday. It was built with input from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the National Seismology Center (NSC). Local Indian languages that are supported by Android will be available for these alerts.

Be Aware and Take Action are the two alert types that the company sends out. Users who experience MMI 3 and 4 shaking during an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.5 or above receive the "Be Aware" alerts. If your phone is on silent or do not disturb mode, it just displays an alert on the screen without making any sound.

According to Google, people who experience MMI 5+ shaking during a 4.5-magnitude earthquake are issued notices. In this instance, the alert will play a loud sound and ignore all notification settings on the system, including Do Not Disturb.

The message also advises users on what they may do to protect themselves, such hide beneath a table.

Google claimed that it can identify potential earthquakes by observing seismic activity in a given location on numerous Android smartphones. According to the company, warnings frequently last for several seconds before vibrating.

Google released Android Earthquake Alerts for Californians in 2020. Users should have Wi-Fi or cellular data connectivity on a phone running Android 5 or later. Users must also have their smartphones' location settings activated in order to get earthquake alerts.

By selecting Settings > Safety & emergency, then Earthquake notifications, users can begin receiving earthquake alerts. Through Settings > Location > Advanced > Earthquake notifications, customers can also enable earthquake alerts.

Google already sends flood alerts using AI to every region of India. In 2018, the business launched the flood alarm pilot in Patna, the state capital of Bihar in India. In 2020, it extended flood notifications to the entire country of India.
