Delhi : A first-generation iPhone from 2007 that was still sealed in its original box sold for $63,356 (about INR 52,000,000) on Sunday at a prestigious auction house in the US. The sum paid for an initial iPhone is the highest ever.

The record-breaking sale at LCG Auctions went for $52,797 and included a 20% buyer's premium fee, bringing the total to over $60,000. The pricey iPhone, according to a Business Insider article, was given to Karen Green, a cosmetic tattoo artist in New Jersey, after she accepted a new position. The original iPhone could only be used with AT&T, but Karen was tethered to a Verizon phone line (a global telecommunications holding company based in the United States), thus it stayed unboxed.

Green had previously considered selling the iPhone because she needed the cash for her studio, but she chose to keep it after learning that a different first-generation iPhone from 2007 just sold for about $40,000. She contacted LCG Auctions in October, and from February 2 to February 19, the phone was offered for auction. Bidding began at $2,500 when it was anticipated to sell for at least $50,000, but it ultimately brought in more than 100 times its initial cost.

Steve Jobs unveiled the iPhone 16 years ago in January at the Macworld convention in San Francisco. Apple charged $599 (or around £47,920 in today's money) for the first-generation iPhone. The device had a 3.5-inch screen, a 2-megapixel camera, and 4GB or 8GB of storage when it first became available.
