Delhi : The technology for charging smartphones is becoming ludicrous. Realme recently demonstrated 240W charging speed, which took nine and a half minutes to fully charge a 4,600mAh battery. Xiaomi, a competitor of Realme, has also revealed that its sub-brand Redmi is developing comparable technology. But, to up the charging-speed game, the company is increasing the charging speed to 300W to fully charge a 4,100mAh battery in under 5 minutes.

Redmi demonstrated the charging technology in a video on the Chinese social media site Weibo, as reported by Android Authority. To show off the 300W charging technology, a Redmi Note 12 Exploration Edition smartphone with a 4,100mAh battery was used. The phone was altered for this test because the standard Note 12 Discovery Edition has a 4,300mAh battery. Also, it supports an absurd charging speed.

The customised Redmi Note 12 Discovery Edition charged to 50% in around 3 minutes and reached full power in about 5 minutes. At its maximum, the charging rate was 290.6W, barely shy of 300W.

Redmi refers to it as a 300W Immortal Second Charger, which sounds different from the 120W Hypercharge technology used on several Xiaomi and Redmi devices. It's interesting to note that the 4,300mAh battery on the original Redmi Note 12 Discovery Edition supports 210W wired fast charging. Three 100W rapid charging chips are built into the phone, enabling it to charge completely in less than 10 minutes. In China, the phone debuted in October 2022.

At least among Chinese smartphone manufacturers, fast charging is becoming more commonplace. While 65W charging is still not available for Apple and Samsung smartphones, companies like OnePlus, iQOO, Xiaomi, and Realme are introducing at least 80W charging to their mid-range models. Most premium phones that cost more than Rs 40,000 come with at least 100W charging, which can fully charge a 4,500mAh battery-powered phone in 30 minutes.

During MWC 2023, Realme demonstrated 240W charging technology. The new Realme GT 3 has ultra-fast charging technology and has a 4,600mAh battery. According to Realme, the smartphone has the fastest charging technology of any commercially available smartphone and can reach full charge in nine and a half minutes. Details regarding the Realme GT 3's introduction in India are yet unknown, but the manufacturer has already hinted at it. On the other hand, Xiaomi hasn't been specific about when or if any commercial models would support 300W fast charging. It has also shown off some charging technology (like Mi Air Charge), but it is not yet accessible to the general public.
