New Delhi : Facebook.Inc on Wednesday blocked posts with hashtag #ResignModi, later restored with an explanation that it was done by mistake. Soon after the posts were blocked, many people claimed that the government has asked them to do so as India registers massive coronavirus cases during the second wave.

The social media giant clarified that it barred the hashtag by mistake and no such direction was received from the government. Facebook periodically blocks hashtags for a variety of reasons, some manually but many also based on automated internal guidelines.

"We temporarily blocked this hashtag by mistake, not because the Indian government asked us to, and have since restored it," a Facebook company spokesperson said.

Meanwhile, India is making grim-record with over 3.5 lakh new coronavirus cases daily. On Thursday, the nation has registered around 3.8 lakh new COVID-19 infection cases.

Amid surge, the nation is also dealing with the shortage of oxygen cylinders, beds and other health equipment needed for the treatment of COVID patients.

More than 3000 people have lost their lives to coronavirus in 24 hours.
