Lucknow : Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has decided to slash nothing less than 15 public holidays marking birth and death anniversaries of VIPs, mostly brought in by previous Akhilesh Yadav government.

During Akhilesh Yadav government there were 42 public holidays in total, including 17 that marks death and birth anniversary of great personalities.

A couple of days back, Yogi Adityanath had hinted the move while addressing a function to commemorate the birth anniversary of Babasaheb Ambedkar.

He had suggested that instead of giving an holiday, students must be given a short session to teach them about the great personalities.

On Tuesday, the Chief Minister - the minister in-charge of general administration and human resource - moved a formal proposal before his Cabinet.

"The Cabinet has canceled 15 public holidays marking the anniversaries of great personalities. Students will now be taught on these days about these figures through various programmes," Cabinet Minister Shrikant Sharma said.

With this Uttar Pradesh government is first to slash public holidays.
