Negative effects of chemotherapy and cancer treatment
New Delhi : Chemotherapy and cancer is interlinked with each other. It is a type of treatment, commonly referred by doctors to cancer patients. The healing process includes the use of one or more anti-cancer drugs as part of a uniform chemo routine. The drug is used to kill cells that grow rapidly in the infected area, making the case severe with the passing day. Though 100 types of cancer have been known till date and giving chemo to the patients has been an effective method to cure the diseases. However, like most treatment, chemotherapy offers list of side effects.
Some of common side effects of chemotherapy include:
- Hair loss on the head and sometimes, all over the body
- Burning pain in the toes or fingers which goes after the chemotherapy treatment ends
- Powerful chemotherapy drugs, such as taxanes and cisplatin may cause nerve damage.
- Strong chemo drugs may harm the tissues lining a person’s throat and mouth, thereby causing sores.
Also, some cancer patients have been reportedly saying about problems which became permanent even after chemotherapy has ended. Some long-term side effects include
- Cardiac arrests on preliminary treatment, though there are chances that it may vanish until later. Adriamycin, a chemotherapy drug, may cause the heart muscle to weaken, thereby causing a decreased ability to pump blood through the body.
- Most people undergoing chemotherapy tend complaint about fatigued most of the time.
- Infertility, sometimes, become the major concern for young people who undergoes chemotherapy However, not everyone going through chemotherapy is affected from this problem.
One basic difference between chemotherapy and surgery is that, chemo work throughout the whole body while the later helps to remove or damage cancer cell in a certain area. Chemotherapy responds differently according to body types and types of cancer cells. Hopefully, more advanced techniques will come up increase the success rate associated with the cancer treatment.
