Chandrayaan-3 moon landing mission set for launch on 14th July

New Delhi : The Indian Space Research Organisation ( ISRO) has announced that the eagerly anticipated Chandrayaan-3 Moon Landing mission is scheduled to take place on 14th July at 2:35 pm hrs from Sriharikota. This mission serves as a follow-on to the successful Chandrayaan-2 and aims to showcase the end-to-end capability of safely landing and roving on the lunar surface.

Chandrayaan-3 will be launched by the powerful Launch Vehicle Mark-III from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, signifying another significant step forward in India's space exploration endeavors. The propulsion module will transport the lander and rover configuration to a lunar orbit of 100 km. Notably, the module carries the Spectro-Polarimetry of Habitable Planet Earth (SHAPE) payload, which will conduct spectral and polarimetric measurements of Earth from the lunar orbit.

The primary objectives of the Chandrayaan-3 mission are threefold:

1: To demonstrate a safe and soft landing on the lunar surface.

2: To showcase rover roving capabilities on the moon.

3: To conduct in-situ scientific experiments.

To achieve these mission objectives, the lander is equipped with several advanced technologies, including:

Altimeters: Utilizing laser and RF-based altimeters.

Velocimeters: Incorporating Laser Doppler Velocimeter and Lander Horizontal Velocity Camera.

Inertial Measurement: Employing laser gyro-based inertial referencing and accelerometer package.

Propulsion System: Utilizing 800N throttleable liquid engines, 58N attitude thrusters, and throttleable engine control electronics.

Navigation, Guidance & Control (NGC): Designing a powered descent trajectory and associated software elements.

Hazard Detection and Avoidance: Integrating Lander Hazard Detection & Avoidance Camera and Processing Algorithm.

Landing Leg Mechanism: Ensuring safe and stable landing on the lunar surface.

The launch of Chandrayaan-3 marks another significant milestone in India's space exploration program and highlights the nation's commitment to advancing scientific knowledge and technological prowess. All eyes are now eagerly focused on the upcoming mission, which holds great promise for further expanding our understanding of the Moon and its scientific potential.
