Delhi : Elon Musk missed the original deadline of April 1 because the necessary backend technology was not available, therefore on Thursday he set a new deadline of April 20 to remove all old Blue  ticks.

Removing so-called blue ticks swiftly and on a large scale reportedly presented technical difficulties, and the only method available at the time was a manual one.

In order to protect celebrities from impersonation, Twitter introduced its authentication system in 2009. However, Musk now wants everyone to pay $8 per month for the Blue badge.

The New York Times and the White House both declined to pay for the verified Blue membership service.

The highest-paid NBA player of all time, LeBron James, who earns over $40 million annually, also declined to pay Twitter.

"Final date for removing legacy Blue checks is 4/20," Musk wrote in a tweet. It was previously revealed that the Musk-run corporation lacks the necessary backend infrastructure to simultaneously delete 4.2 lakh old accounts with Blue ticks. The Washington Post reports that "removal of verification badges is a largely manual process powered by a system prone to breaking, which draws on a large internal database -- similar to an Excel spreadsheet -- in which verification data is stored."

"In the past, there was no reliable way to properly delete badges in mass, which forced employees dealing with spam, for example, to remove check marks one at a time. Duct tape held everything together" , it said, citing a former worker.

Musk previously stated that all old accounts with Blue verification have to be deleted by April 1. The New York Times' Blue tick is the only thing the corporation has so far removed.
